Pram Gigography

This page aims to list every gig that Pram have ever played, and give as much detail on each as possible. It is currently woefully incomplete. Any assistance gratefully received.

Introduction

The information in this gigography has been drawn from many sources. Wherever possible the specific source is quoted or linked.

Particular thanks must go to Daren Garret for providing a complete list of gigs from his time in Pram

Melody Maker (09 Oct 1993):
How can they be so quiet and yet be so impossible to ignore? Pram are no longer anything like as fey and reserved as they once were; they're willing to use blasts of seriously vicious guitar here and there, and the drums often whip up a torrential tumult. But the centre of the attention is still Rosie, the soft-voiced woman at her ironing board - on top of which is the keyboard from which she produces hypnotic, circling, eerie washes of sound.
Tonight, Pram concentrate on selections from their startling new album "The Stars Are So Big, The Earth is So Small...Stay As You Are", and the mixture of confusion and resolution in that title reflects the violently mixed feelings in the music. Pram started out as an unremittingly jagged, severe sonic assault. Now they've taken on trance-inducing, ambient-dance qualities. Traces of late-Sixties psychadelic pop (especially Barrett-era Pink Floyd) add an extra dimension of appealing strangeness to some of the new songs.
As these ingedients combine with their distinctive terror-in-Toytown keyboard sounds, Pram sound as familiar as a recurring dream, yet still unique and disturbing. The words tell a series of surreal twilight tales; and just when the music starts to get too cosy, the guitarists attack their instruments with vicious vigour, or Rosie's calming voice is suddenly raised to a scream.
Now that Cranes are Top 30 pop stars, maybe people will have the nerve to take one step further and investigate the music that takes their deconstruction of the familiar a stage further; music that really feels like memories of a disturbed childhood, or like the waking moments after an unsettling early-morning dream. Nobody induces those feeling of uneasy fascination more powerfully than Pram. (Dave Jennings)

Melody Maker:
Gigs are so often that headachy bit after you've got the T-shirt. This was special, this was shaking your head speechless, this was realising you're going to have to organise the next few weeks of your life around seeing this band as many times as possible.
I came expecting lo-fi noodles and I got groovy pearls.
Sure, Matt's guitar crackles with eye-razing wow; yes, screwdrivers and violin bows are passed around and Rosie's keyboards sitting on an ironing board make you think you've stumbled into their living-room, but the bumping stew that Darren and Sam cook up is shockingly funky.
Pram tonight are a beautiful confusion; the cheesyphonic keyboards, spidery guitar and Rosie's Brum Mo Tucker vocals surfing the phat boombap of the rhythm section in an eerie mix of the cosmic and physical that reminds me of nothing so much as the low-end, aerial rap of A Tribe Called Quest or Gang Starr.
"In Dreams" is the highlight, 17 minutes of rolling wail and throb that transfixes the crowd, ts epic ebb gradually drawing us in, our heads filling, our bodies swimming, our jaws dropping. Extra delerium is supplied by a trumpeter who threads in snatches of "A Love Supreme" as the drums flow on.
It's a masterpiece, like Sun Ra has been reborn in the West Midlands and is now jamming with Pharaoh Saunders. As it ends I realise my mouth is hanging wide open and my fillings are doing the Watusi.
Pram hop off stage and all we can do for the rest of the night is swear a lot and search for words.

Pram @ ICA, The Mall, London 16 June 1994

Well, Pram were good but the utterly pretentious setting of the venue
and a sparse crowd (they were supporting Strangelove whom we didn't
bother waiting to see) didn't help. The drums were way too
overpowering, the set was too short, the sound was mixed badly and it
wasn't loud enough. Somehow Pram still played well but the Institute
for Contemporary Arts - not often used for gigs - needs to sort itself
out. The cocktail train back to Coventry was much more fun. So let's
skip forward a couple of weeks to...

Mambo Taxi/Pram/Superego @ Leicester Princess Charlotte
30 June 1994

Superego opened (quick hint, guys: change your name to super-E-go) and
weren't very good. Punky pop with a soupcon of grunge. Yawn. One of
the songs was quite good in a Drive Like Jehu way and it was f'ing
loud but that wasn't enough to keep me from the bar.

Pram have turned into a tight funky quartet, or quintet if the
trumpet/sax player is around, which he wasn't tonight. The drummer is
mental and seems to keep 4 simple rhythms bouncing along
simultaneously. The guitar/cello player sometimes does guitar solos
with only the interesting notes - the boring bits left out and nothing
else put in - and spends half the night hiding cross-legged looking
like he's eating his guitar. The bass/2nd keyboard player makes a
violin bow across a bass sound like the most beautiful instrument
ever. And the singer/ 1st keyboard player wore her Bermuda skirt
tonight.

Those keyboads are what make Pram. First off, they are poised on top
of ironing boards (yes, they have two instead of one on stage now!)
and they make the most wondrous sounds - from impressions of
5-year-olds playing xylophones through the Casio VL-Tone right up to
the last space ship you saw taking off. How Rosie can reach those
high monotone notes and play like that I will never know. And the new
song they closed with, I had to look twice to confirm what I saw in
her hand... yes, it was a recorder! I want the new album. Slobber,
slobber. Pram - funk, jazz, rock, folk, ambient and the kitchen sink
are all there and they have a Jacques Cousteau fixation. We are not
worthy.

Mambo Taxi shot their bolt in the first 30 seconds; I suddenly
realised why I have a small liking for this dreadful band. The
keyboardist plays 'No Xmas for John Quays' (that Fall song or
something equivalent to it) for the whole set, regardless of whatever
rubbish the rest of th band is coming up with. And she plays
one-handed with a bottle of Newcastle Brown in the other - an
admirable trait. They do have one good song ("Do You Always Dress
Like That in Front of Other People's Boyfriends?"), otherwise avoid
like the plague!
